Description
The Bright Puppy program lasts from when you start (see entry criteria below) until your dog turns 1 year of age. It is very important that you read the description of the program as it has multiple parts: Bright Puppy lessons, Puppy Playtime, Nosework for Bright Puppies, Let's Go! (adolescent class). Overall, it is a very flexible program with the EXCEPTION of the age criteria for Puppy Playtime, which ends at 18 weeks of age. Note: After you have completed the registration information we will send you an email with the subject line 'Bright Puppy Start Date' that gives you more details about your first lesson
Entry criteria and important notes:
*Maximum age for entry into this program is 5 months of age. **If your dog is over 5 months of age, please revisit the Shop page and look at the description for Focus Fido.
*Puppy must have been at home with you for 14 days prior to starting.
*Puppy must have had at least one parvo/distemper vaccination (veterinary record required).
*The Puppy Playtime portion of the program is only available to your puppy until they turn 18 weeks of age (4.5 months of age). Note: we close for about 2 weeks at the end of August and two weeks at the end of December. These closures may impact your puppy's age-based Playtime window.
Program flow:
The first lesson is called the Bright Puppy Primer. It is an Orientation that you attend with your puppy (all family members welcome). It is attended once only on either a Tuesday 7:00-8:15pm or a Saturday 9:45-11:00am. To see the specific dates for the Primer, click on the drop down arrow (the dates don't always appear in order so you many need to scroll a bit).
After attending the Primer, you will receive an email that contains the link to a simple reservation calendar so that you can reserve spots in the Bright Puppy lessons (and other components). The Bright Puppy lessons are a rotation of 8 topics that are to be attended for a least 8 weeks following the Primer. Lessons are 45 minutes and there are LOTS of time slots to choose from: Mondays 9:45am, Tuesdays 4:30, 5:30, 6:30, 7:30pm, Fridays 10:30am and Saturdays 8:30, 9:30, 10:30am. Most people attend once a week, but you are welcome to attend multiple times a week. Note: there will always be room for you in your preferred lesson time.
You will also use the reservation calendar mentioned to reserve spots in Puppy Playtime and Nosework for Bright Puppies; as well as the Let's Go! lessons which you will seamless transition to approximately 8 weeks after attending the Primer.
Puppy Playtime (off-leash interaction) is Thursdays at 6:00pm and has a specific age-based end - this specific activity is only attended until the puppy turns 18 weeks of age.
As part of Bright Puppy program, you have the opportunity to attend two nose work sessions (Nosework for Bright Puppies) as an introduction to this excellent hobby. Class times are Tuesdays 6:45pm or Thursdays at 7:15pm. Like all the other portions, spots are reserved using the calendar you will receive after the Primer.
The remaining section of the program is the Let's Go! lessons which you will seamlessly transition to after the rotation of 8 weeks of Bright Puppy lessons. The adolescent classes (Let's Go!) will last until your dog is 1 year of age. These lessons are offered: Monday 10:45am, 11:45am, 4:30pm, 5:30pm, Wednesdays 5:00pm, 6:00pm, 7:00pm, Friday 11:30am, Saturday 11:30am, 1:45pm.
Approach to training and main concepts:
In this force-free, reward-based program we teach foundation skills while also providing enrichment.
The overlying concept are:
*Set boundaries/rules/routines to encourage peaceful coexistence
*Ensure your dog has access to appropriate hobbies (mental & physical enrichment)
*Train/teach your dog to do behaviours you like
Course topics include, but are not limited to: auto attention, name recognition, loose leash walking, coming when called, drop it/trade, polite greetings, getting on/off surfaces when asked, targeting and so much more! We also address common behaviours like mouthing/biting, resource guarding, house training, and so on.
